I loved @Anthropic and all their products enabled me to create... right until they named their new model @Claude Mythos despite our trademark of @MythOS and use in commerce since 2018, but now... it's complicated.
I. The Pattern
What does an @Artificial Intelligence (AI) company and a marriage have in common? More than I expected. In both cases, things worked—until they didn’t. Not because of conflict or a single failure, but because something quieter broke underneath: the agreements that made the relationship work stopped being upheld. I’ve spent the better part of the last decade building @MythOS—a system that unifies @Memory, @Mind, and @Mouth to become an operating system for personal and organizational narrative. I started writing in it in 2017, and over time it became a way of thinking about how identity and knowledge evolve when continuity is preserved. In the last year, that vision accelerated. Working alongside Anthropic’s models, I rebuilt MythOS into something closer to what I had originally imagined: a system where your @context compounds, your narrative remains yours, and intelligence builds over time instead of resetting with each interaction. So when Anthropic’s next model surfaced—leaked ahead of release and carrying the name Mythos—I paid attention. Within 24 hours, multiple people sent it to me knowing how central MythOS has been to my life and work. My reaction wasn’t simple. There was pride. What I’ve built over the last year wouldn’t exist in its current form without these tools, and seeing something adjacent emerge from a company I’ve worked closely with felt, in part, like alignment. And at the same time, something else was clear. A space I had been building in for years had been entered without visible awareness that it already existed. A basic trademark check would seemingly have surfaced that—along with the agreements surrounding it. That absence of @awareness—not the name itself, but the process behind it—was what mattered. Around the same time, journalists were covering a class action lawsuit involving Anthropic and the use of copyrighted material in training data, raising broader questions about consent and attribution. What stood out to me wasn’t the specifics. It was the pattern, because I had seen it before. About a year and a half earlier, I filed for @divorce. Not because love disappeared or because of a single event, but because over time it became clear that the agreements that made the relationship coherent were no longer holding. At the time, I didn’t have language for it. Now I do: a breakdown not of feeling, but of @alignment. And once you see that pattern, you start seeing it everywhere—including here.
II. What Agreements Actually Do
@Agreements make @trust possible over time. Not feelings, not intentions—agreements. They define what is shared, what is assumed, and what can be relied on without constant verification. Some are explicit—contracts, terms, documented expectations. Others are implicit—the expectation of honesty, the assumption that existing work will be acknowledged, the understanding that context will be checked before entering a space. Both matter. And when they break, it’s usually the implicit ones you feel first. We don’t usually think of systems as relationships, but they are. Creators have relationships with platforms, developers with tools, and companies with users and ecosystems. Each is governed by agreements—about ownership, attribution, boundaries, and process. Unlike marriage, these relationships are plural. We maintain many at once, overlapping and evolving, each with its own incentives. That introduces something new: divergence is inevitable. Not all systems are optimized for alignment. Some are optimized for growth, and growth tends to outpace agreement. It rewards speed and expansion, often at the expense of the relationships that made that growth possible in the first place. The same principle applies here. Agreements don’t fail loudly. More often, they fail quietly—through drift.
III. When Alignment Breaks
In my marriage, nothing clearly broke. It drifted. Over time, the shared structure we operated within stopped being consistent. The way I understood our agreements—and the way they were being enacted—no longer matched. Not in a way that could be resolved in a single conversation, but as a persistent misalignment in how reality itself was being constructed between us. I tried to restore alignment through conversation, clarification, and repair. For a while, I believed effort alone could rebuild it. But what I eventually came to understand is that alignment isn’t something one person can maintain on behalf of two. It has to be mutual. When it isn’t, the system begins to degrade—even if, from the outside, everything still appears intact. That pattern extends far beyond relationships. We enter into dozens of agreements with the systems we build on. At first, alignment feels natural. You choose a platform because it empowers you, and you grow alongside it. But systems evolve, incentives shift, and timelines accelerate. Without explicit renegotiation, agreements drift. Not through @malice, but through momentum—through scale. From the outside, everything still works. Internally, the coherence is gone. At that point, the question becomes unavoidable: is this repairable, or has the relationship itself changed? For me, the answer became clear. And the decision that followed wasn’t emotional. It was structural.
IV. When Systems Move Without Alignment
When Mythos surfaced, the issue wasn’t just the name—it was what it revealed about process. I don’t assume malice. My experience with Anthropic’s tools has been overwhelmingly positive, which is precisely why the signal was structural. MythOS is not just an idea—it’s a name I’ve been using publicly and continuously for years. It represents a system built around narrative continuity and context, influenced by thinkers like Charles Eisenstein and his work in The Ascent of Humanity, which explores a shift toward understanding identity and intelligence as relational and story-based. So when a closely adjacent name appears without visible awareness of that context, it suggests something simple: the system moved forward without checking. This is how agreement drift shows up at scale—not as deliberate violation, but as absence of awareness. At smaller scales, that gap gets caught through conversation. At scale, velocity replaces verification, and assumption replaces inquiry. By the time something surfaces publicly, the system has already moved.
V. The Pattern in Plain Sight
Anthropic isn’t alone in this. Multiple AI companies are now navigating legal challenges around training data and consent. The details are still unfolding, but the core tension is clear: AI systems are being built on vast bodies of human-created work while the agreements governing that work are still being defined. Who owns what, what constitutes permission, and where transformation ends and appropriation begins—these are no longer edge cases. They are foundational questions. The pattern is consistent: systems move faster than the agreements that would otherwise govern them. Not always intentionally, but consistently enough to create friction. Because when agreements aren’t checked, assumptions fill the gap—and at scale, those assumptions don’t stay theoretical. They become products, defaults, and the baseline reality others are forced to respond to.
VI. The Shared Failure Mode
Across both experiences—personal and institutional—the pattern is the same. An agreement exists. One side begins operating outside it. Alignment is no longer actively maintained, and over time, reality diverges. At first, it’s subtle. Then it becomes undeniable. At that point, something has to happen: correction, renegotiation, or separation. What makes this moment different is that we’re inside a broader paradigm shift. AI changes how we relate to knowledge, authorship, and intelligence itself, and existing agreements don’t map cleanly onto what’s emerging. Old frameworks stretch. New ones haven’t fully formed. Friction is inevitable—not because of bad intent, but because the rules themselves are still being written. That doesn’t remove responsibility, but it does change the context. Because paradigm shifts are rarely smooth. They expose where alignment hasn’t yet been established and force a deeper question: What agreements will make this system work for everyone involved?
VII. Necessary Endings
Alignment and care are not the same thing. You can care deeply, respect what you’ve built, and feel genuine gratitude—and still recognize that the relationship is no longer aligned. That doesn’t mean it failed. It means it changed. VIII. Boundaries as Integrity When alignment breaks, there’s a choice: ignore it, rationalize it, or acknowledge it. You can name it, attempt repair, and if necessary, set a boundary. That’s what divorce was for me—not a reaction, but a boundary. A recognition that continuing without alignment would require abandoning something fundamental. The same principle applies elsewhere. When agreements are no longer upheld, the response isn’t escalation—it’s clarity. Sometimes that leads to conversation. Sometimes it leads to formal action. Not out of hostility, but out of responsibility.
IX. MythOS and Continuity
MythOS emerged from this tension. We don’t have one relationship—we have many, across tools, systems, and collaborators. They evolve, they shift, and they sometimes fall out of alignment. So the question becomes: how do you remain coherent across changing relationships? My answer is ownership of context. Your narrative, memory, and perspective shouldn’t be locked into any one system—they should remain with you. So you can move between relationships, deepen the aligned ones, and leave when alignment no longer holds—without losing yourself in the process.
X. Where This Goes From Here
I hope my relationship with Anthropic doesn’t reach the level of contention my marriage did. In both cases, my instinct is the same: communicate clearly, name what I’m experiencing, request repair, and show up for alignment. That’s still my orientation. Because there is real respect here. Real gratitude. But there’s also a line. And when agreements are no longer upheld—through drift, oversight, or scale—boundaries have to be enforced. Not as conflict, but as integrity. Because every relationship continues only as long as its agreements do. And when those agreements end, something else begins.
