**The **Million Dollar Homepage is a website conceived in 2005 by Alex Tew to raise money for his university tuition. It was a simple home page consisting of a million pixels in a 1000×1000 grid.
He sold 10x10 blocks for $1 per pixel, with each pixel displaying an image-based link to the website of the buyer's choice. The purchasers of these pixel blocks provided the tiny images to be displayed, a URL to be linked to the images, and a slogan to be displayed whenever a cursor hovered over the link. The aim of the website was to sell all of the pixels in the image, eventually generating a million dollars.
Launched on August 26, 2005, the website became a phenomenon that inspired many copycat websites in response. As of 2019, The Million Dollar Homepage still had thousands of daily viewers even though many of the website's links had already become unavailable.
The Million Dollar Homepage has inspired other works like 📝Reddit's 📝Place experiment created in partnership with Adobe and 📝One Inc's 📝/ocean project created on 📝Topia.
