Mythos

Dark social refers to the untraceable sharing of content via private digital channels like messaging apps and emails. Initially coined by Alexis Madrigal in 2012, dark social has become a significant player in marketing strategies. It accounts for a sizable portion of consumer sharing, with studies indicating up to 70% of sharing activity happening through dark social channels. Despite its impact, it remains largely invisible to traditional analytics, leading marketers to undervalue its influence. This phenomenon thrives due to the dominance of messaging apps, privacy concerns, and a shift away from public social media platforms. Marketers are now challenged to rethink their attribution models to account for this hidden action by employing tactics like UTM parameters and audience surveys. Successful brands are those that engage with dark social by fostering community-driven experiences and focusing on brand affinity.
