De-escalation in relationships refers to intentionally shifting a connection into a less entangled or intense form—such as moving from romantic partners to friends, or from nesting partners to non-cohabitating partners—rather than ending the connection altogether. It’s especially relevant in @Polyamory, @Relationship Anarchy, and @Consensual Non-Monogamy (CNM), where relationships may take diverse and evolving forms. De-escalation isn’t a fallback for “failed” relationships, but a conscious restructuring to better fit each person’s needs, values, and circumstances.
