Mythos

Neuter Your Ex campaigns refer to a growing trend among animal rescues and shelters, particularly in the United States, that invites individuals to make a donation in exchange for naming a rescue animal—commonly a feral cat—after an ex-partner. The organization then arranges for the animal to be spayed or neutered, often providing the donor with a certificate as proof of the deed. These fundraisers, popular around Valentine’s Day, feature donation tiers and encourage supporters to submit only first names or nicknames for privacy. Prominent shelters, such as Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center in New Jersey and Rescue Pets of Florida, have embraced the concept, sharing photos and commemorative certificates with donors. In some variations, participants can even name cockroaches or other animals destined to be eaten by predators. While lighthearted, Neuter Your Ex campaigns channel emotional energy from breakups into support for vital animal welfare programs, funding spay and neuter services and raising awareness about animal overpopulation through viral, shareable content.

I absolutely love these campaigns as they are artful advocacy for animals. It's playful, yet nondestructive. It's immensely shareable and it provides public good.
