Blake Kuwahara is a prominent figure in contemporary eyewear design, recognized for his "frame-within-a-frame" aesthetic. Originally a student of the sciences, he earned a Doctorate of Optometry from UC Berkeley before pivoting to the creative sector. After serving as a creative director at Wilshire Designs and gaining international recognition with KATA Eyewear, he launched his eponymous brand in 2014. His signature technique involves laminating two separate frames—often an inner classic silhouette and a bold architectural outer shape—to create a look that balances avant-garde art with wearable comfort.Kuwahara’s work is frequently influenced by his background in psychobiology and optometry, particularly in his "Grey Label" collection, which utilizes skeletal and anatomical motifs. He is a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and a recipient of the Silmo d'Or. Beyond his own label, he founded Focus Group West, a design firm that has developed collections for brands such as Coach and John Varvatos. His frames are handcrafted in Japan and have been worn by numerous high-profile public figures.
When I accidentally wandered into 📝Gogosha Optique in February 2026 pretending to be shopping for new glasses while looking for a place to pee, the first pair of glasses the person who greeted me showed me was a limited edition frame from Kuwahara's Grey Label collection. I knew nothing of him or his lore, but after I viewed hundreds of other frames in their inventory, I ended up circling back to the frame within a frame and placed my order.
