There are words I wish I could tell you, truths that burn in my throat, feelings that weigh heavy on my heart. But I know these words would shatter you, so they'll live here instead, among strangers who understand what it means to love someone so deeply while being unable to protect them from themselves.
I'm not your enemy, but you can't see that right now. Not in this storm of fear and pain that's consuming you. You're fighting shadows that wear my face, and I'm powerless to show you they're not real.
I love you with an intensity that scares me. It terrifies me how much power your pain has over my heart, how deeply your suffering cuts into my soul. I love you. God, how I love you—with a desperation that matches your own. I watch you struggle with demons I cannot fight, pain I cannot soothe, fears I cannot dispel. My heart breaks for your suffering even as your reactions threaten to destroy us both.
When darkness grips you, your love becomes a cage built from ultimatums and threats. Each bar forged from "if you truly loved me," each lock sealed with "or I'll leave forever." I watch you construct it around us both, your fear and rage the mortar that fills every gap, until there's no room left to breathe.
Your needs are mountains that must be moved, while mine are inconveniences to be dismissed. When I speak, you hear only threats. When I reach out, you feel only daggers. Every attempt at compromise becomes evidence of betrayal in your carefully constructed narrative.
In these moments, there is no middle ground. Everything is all or nothing, black or white, complete devotion or utter betrayal. The slightest suggestion of change becomes an attack, any boundary becomes abandonment, any disagreement becomes war. You demand unconditional love while attaching endless conditions to your own. The irony would be beautiful if it wasn't so devastating.
I see your pain, raw and endless. Behind your rage, I see your terror. Behind your demands, I hear your desperation. You're so afraid of being abandoned that you've made yourself impossible to hold onto, so terrified of being hurt that you strike first, again and again.
Your sense of persecution is absolute—everyone is against you, everyone is plotting, everyone is trying to hurt you—except me, until suddenly I am the worst betrayer of all. The narrative shifts with your emotions, reality bending to accommodate your pain. I find myself apologizing for crimes I haven't committed, accepting blame for hurts I didn't cause, desperately trying to prove a loyalty that shouldn't need proving.
You claim I'm betraying you, but the real betrayal is how you've twisted love into a weapon—how you've turned my care into chains, my concern into proof of disloyalty. You demand that I set myself on fire to keep you warm, then blame me for the burns.
Your pain is a labyrinth, and every time I try to guide you out, you see it as me pushing you deeper in. You want me to fix everything while simultaneously viewing every solution as a threat. I find myself shrinking, becoming smaller, quieter, more careful. Every word must be weighed, every action considered for how it might be misinterpreted. The space in which I can safely exist grows ever smaller, constrained by your fears, your needs, your absolute certainty that any compromise means betrayal.
I've become so focused on managing your emotions that I've forgotten how to feel my own.
You swing between clinging desperation and violent rejection, between "I'll die without you" and "I hate you more each day." Each crisis feels like life or death, each disagreement an existential threat. And in your darkest moments, you threaten your own existence, knowing it's the one weapon I have no defense against. How can I maintain any boundary when the cost might be your life? So I yield, again and again, watching more of myself disappear with each surrender.
Yet I stay, because I see the wounded soul behind the warfare. I stay because I've experienced the depth of your love in moments of peace. I stay because between the storms, you show a capacity for understanding and tenderness that takes my breath away. I stay because I know the gentle heart that beats beneath the fear, so loving, gentle, full of dreams and potential. I stay because leaving feels like giving up on someone who's already been given up on too many times.
I am tired. So tired—of walking on eggshells, of denying my own reality to validate yours, of managing your emotions at the expense of my own. Of watching everything I build crumble under the weight of your fears. Yet the thought of you alone in your darkness is unbearable. So I stay, I soothe, I surrender, I submit. I watch another piece of myself fade away, sacrificed on the altar of your pain.
And still, somehow, I love you. Even as you tear us both apart, I love you. Even as you make loving you feel like dying, I love you. Even as it destroys me, I love you. Even as I lose myself, I love you. Despite everything, I love you.
Perhaps that's the most tragic part of all.
