Just had a sort of walking 📝Meditation with Connor—my co-working colleague at 📝Spaces—and was prompted to assess the Laws of Compliments. Looking for 📝First Principles, we find ourselves at the definition of the language; an expression of esteem, respect, affection, or admiration.
Saying, "I like your body", is an expression in regard to circumstance and genetics—not the human it created. And, remarking "I like your bike" is still an expression about the bike and the builders, not the person riding it. The real problem is that saying "I like [anything]" isn't a compliment to the other person at all—it's a declaration of your interest. Beginning with "I like" is an act of self-pleasure.
Declared interest isn't a compliment.
Compliment the choice, not the object.
