The UN has warned that Lebanon faces a humanitarian catastrophe after a devastating explosion in Beirut’s only port leveled large swaths of the city and killed at least 145 people, injured 5,000, and displaced at least 250,000 from their homes. [1][2] The blast was the detonation of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer stored improperly in a warehouse and left for six years. [3] Citizens are outraged and suffering after years of corruption and negligence. [4] Most nations can relate to this.
Lebanon’s economy was already in a state of crisis before this disaster. Over a million people in the country live in poverty, according to the UN, and a recent survey found half the population fearful they could not find enough to eat. After the blast, the situation has grown even bleaker.
In every nation, the politicians and profiteers that have subjugated their peoples will be brought to justice by those they have oppressed.
