Mythos

Kibu vs. Signal explores the fundamental differences in how messaging apps 📝Kibu and 📝Signal manage user encryption keys, particularly when synchronizing across devices. Signal permits encryption keys to reside on multiple devices, including desktops, which significantly broadens the potential attack surface for unauthorized access. Until July 2024, Signal’s desktop application stored the decryption key for messages in plain-text, allowing anyone with physical device access to decrypt and export messages, regardless of Signal account access. Even after implementing desktop OS keychains, Signal remains vulnerable: on Windows and Linux, other applications can access decryption keys, exposing users to malware threats, and while macOS offers some improvement, security concerns persist. Security researchers have shown that it is possible to recover disappearing messages from Signal's desktop app, underlining these risks. In contrast, Kibu ties all account keys to a single authorized device protected by biometrics, ensuring that keys never leave the iOS keychain—even for desktop use. This “trust-minimizing” approach is consistent with practices detailed in 📝Zero Trust Architecture and 📝Biometric Authentication systems, emphasizing that robust privacy depends on disciplined design choices as much as cryptographic strength.

Personally, I see Signal’s decision to compromise 📝security for the sake of multi-device convenience has always troubled me, especially as I’ve learned just how exposed users are when encryption keys are shared across platforms. My conversations with 📝Ari Andersen, Kibu’s co-founder, have been instrumental in clarifying these risks and sharpening my perspective on what truly secure architecture demands. Over time, I’ve found myself—and 📝One Inc—relying more on Kibu’s uncompromising approach, which anchors trust at every level. As our mutual advisor, 📝Judy Estrin, said to Ari on his 📝Everything They Know podcast in 2019, "📝Scale down for trust, interconnect for power”—a wisdom that substantively catalyzed the birth of Kibu.
